In June 2011, the Election Commission of India (ECI) established the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) to advance its professional competence in election management, promote people's participation, contribute to developing stronger democratic institutions and support the efforts of ECI in carrying out its mandate and functions. The idea of IIIDEM itself spring from the realization of India's founding fathers and constitution makers that democracy would be best suited for Indian requirements and aspirations as a viable political system. Thus, the Institute supports efficient election management in India and extends this upkeep through globally led initiatives.
