Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD), Lucknow, a Society promoted by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, is a premier institute for providing training, research and consultancy services in the field of agriculture and rural development banking in India and the Asia Pacific Region. The Institute was established in 1983 by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the apex development bank supporting agriculture and rural development in India. BIRD provides training support to supplement Human Resource Development efforts of Banks (Commercial Banks, Cooperative Banks and Regional Rural Banks), Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), Government Departments, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) by organizing training programmes. Based on specific requirements of the organizations concerned, customized programmes are also conducted by the Institute. BIRD has been conducting training programmes for officers of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the top most civil service of the country as well as Indian Economic Service (IES).BIRD offers consultancy services to Banks, Government of India, State Governments, Development Agencies, NABARD, Non Government Organisations and international agencies in the fields relating to agriculture, rural development, rural banking, micro finance and capacity building in relevant areas. BIRD also conducts Applied Research and Studies for gaining insight into the development process of rural banking and related fields for suggesting alternative policy measures. BIRD participates in collaborative ventures with other training institutes, research organizations within and outside the country and acts as a forum for banks and development organizations in India and other developing countries for experience sharing and for learning from each other. Further, BIRD organizes Seminars, Workshops and Conferences in order to facilitate policy debate relating to Rural Development Banking, Microfinance and other relevant themes.BIRD conducts capacity building programmes in functional areas such as Financial Management, Human Resources Development, Financing Agricultural Projects and micro & small enterprises, Institutional Strengthening, Microfinance, Financial Inclusion, and Information Technology for banks. Apart from offering off the shelf training programmes, BIRD conducts client specific customized training programmes on demand. BIRD also organizes international training-cum-exposure visits on microfinance, hi-tech agriculture and agro processing as well as hosts various training programmes catering to the needs of International clients connected with agriculture, cooperatives, rural development microfinance, commodity markets, etc.C-PECBIRD has a Centre for Professional Excellence in Cooperatives (C-PEC) committed to capacity building and certification of cooperative training system in India. The Centre is mainly engaged in certification of cooperative training institutions, designing of standardized and need based training modules for Cooperatives and certification of professional competencies of trainers, cooperative bank staff and officials. CRFIMBIRD has a Centre for Research in Finacial Inclusion and Microfinance (CRFIM) fully dedicated to research in the area of microfinance. The Centre is mainly engaged in microfinance research to facilitate policy initiatives and also to provide research inputs for improvement in design and delivery system for sustainable access to quality financial services by microfinance clients. The Centre also publishes a biennial Journal called Microfinance Review.
